Director Denis Villeneuve is a huge fan of the original 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. He loves the movie so much that he dreamed about making a live-action translation in his teen years. Hollywood Reporter shared that the director drew up detailed storyboards of his imagined film while growing up in Quebec. 

His love of storyboards extends to his current films. "Denis has different storyboard options for every scene, and he lives with those up on his wall during preproduction — experimenting with the mood, economy of shots, and the tempo — until he knows he’s got it exactly right,"  Dune's production designer, Patrice Vermette said.

Dune (2021) is a visual masterpiece and part of this is the work of the talented artists working behind-the-scenes to bring his vision to life. One of those artists shared his work for the film on his personal Artstation site.

"For Dune, I tried to not look at other work and dealt with my own limitations," he told The Art Newspaper. "[Denis Villeneuve] would feed me images that weren’t from designers. It would be an architectural feature or a mood. It's not specific to any artist."
































"What you design by just having an idea seems to then fit the narrative of the world," he added. "I wouldn't say it's by accident. I think it's in your subconscious. Only at the end when everything is put together that you realize that it all fits.
