Grand DUNE: PART ONE (2021) Concept Art by Jerad S. Marantz

Check out Dune: Part One concept art by Jerad S. Marantz!
The blockbuster hit Dune took many turns to completion. It's common in the industry for a film to go through one or more creators on its way to the big screen. A project this large can have multiple visions and concepts that are picked up or abandoned. Many times we don't see the hard work of an illustrator that went unused but thankfully one veteran artist has shared his work.

Jerad S. Marantz shared some of his artwork for the film that he developed with costume designers Kurt Swanson and Bart Mueller known as "Ken and Burt". They left the project and Marantz's hard work was left behind.

Marantz is a professional concept artist who's worked on cinema projects like Black Panther (2018), Justice League (2017), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).

Dune Baron Harkonnen concept art by Jerad S. Marantz

The cruel and sadistic head of House Harkonnen was described by Frank Herbert in his novel as "grossly and immensely fat" with "subtle bulges beneath the folds of his dark robes to reveal that all this fat was sustained partly by portable suspensors harnessed to his flesh. His "fat cheeks were two cherubic mounds beneath spider-black eyes." It also gives some disturbing explanations of what he looked like when he moved saying "his jowls bobbed up and down; the suspensors jiggled and shifted beneath his orange robe." No specific weight is given but we know he must weigh so much that he can't carry himself.

"Early in the project working with costume designers Kurt and Bart I did a bunch of Baron Harkonnen body studies before moving on to illustrating Costume concepts," Jerad said on his Artstation page.

"Here's some early concept work for the Baron's Armor," he added. "I had a lot of fun working with the incredible costume designers Kurt and Bart on this show. This is just some early exploration."

The Baron's battle armor isn't going to be seen in this movie but has been teased for the next. Here's what Marantz's take would have been like.

"Here are some very early stillsuit concept art for Dune," Marantz said. "I did this early in the project just to get the ball rolling for costume designer Kurt and Bart. Love working with these guys! I’m so glad Dune is doing well."

I've interviewed Jerad a few times and it's always wonderful to see his work.
