Remarkable DUNE: PART ONE (2021) Concept Art by Joseph Cross

Check out Dune: Part One concept art by Joseph Cross!
Director Denis Villeneuve's epic film Dune has taken the number one spot at the box office for the second week in a row. The movie added $21.4M for the weekend box office, in 75 offshore markets. This brings the total worldwide box office to $296.4 million. It's an impressive achievement and shows the film is beloved by critics and audiences for its sweeping visuals and epic scope.

Last week I shared an interview with you guys with concept artist Keith Christensen. In the interview, he mentioned the director worked with artist Joseph Cross on the "Still Suit" before he started working on it. The Still Suit is a full-body suit worn in the arid desert of the planet Arrakis designed to preserve the body's moisture. It's said that with the suit's advanced recycling technology you would only lose a "thimble-full" of moisture every day.

Now I can share some of Cross' early pre-production work on the film.

Joseph Cross is a professional concept artist who's worked on big-budget films like Deadpool 2 (2018), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and the Apple+ series Foundation (2021).

Still Suit

"I had the privilege of working on the Dune in early production and contributed to a number of costumes and props working with Denis Villeneuve and Patrice Vermette," he said on his Artstation site. "The first of which was the Stillsuit which started pretty broad and narrowed quickly."

It looks like early designs were far simpler than the complex and intricate style used in the film. Here are some stills from the movie.

As a bonus here's one of his designs for the Fremen ceremonial "crysknife".
