The Dune remake continues to tear up the box office making $330 million worldwide in its third week. I finally got around to watching it this past weekend and it's truly amazing. One of the stand-out moments in the film is whenever the flying machines known as the ornithopters or "'thopters" took off. It had a wonderful organic look. One of the many talented artists working on the film shared some of his designs for the thopters.
George Hull is a professional concept artist who's worked on big-budget films like The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Iron Man 2 (2010), and Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017).
For director Denis Villeneuve one of the most important designs in the film was the ornithopters.
"For instance, the ornithopters, how would you approach a machine that is described in the book as a flying machine that has wings, like a bird flapping in the air?" Villeneuve told IGN. "I was dreaming to have that shape inspired by a dragonfly, that would be muscular and feel realistic, and close to the spirit of a helicopter. It was important to me that all the vehicles obey the laws of nature, gravity, and physics, and that they not look like fantasy vehicles, but something closer to science fiction, to science, and all grounded in the book."
