2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) |
Check out 2001: A Space Odyssey promo art by Robert T. McCall!
Every Friday, I try to feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
Bob McCall had a wonderful career in the 1960s for Life Magazine illustrating their series on the future of space travel. Kubrick saw McCall's work in the magazine and cut them out as a reference while working on his film 2001. Kubrick then asked McCall to come to London and paint promotional material for his film. He later told Johnson Space Center Oral History Project, "My work with [Stanley] Kubrick in London was another facet of my career that was especially enjoyable and challenging and significant, in that it was for a film that has since become a classic."
Robert Theodore McCall was a professional illustrator who also worked on sci-fi classics like Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), The Black Hole (1979) and Future Flight (1987) .
