Back to the Future - Part II (1989) concept art by Edward Eyth |
Every Friday, I try to feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Back to the Future - Part II (1989).
Back to the Future II is turning 25 this year and the love for the movie is stronger than ever. While many of the fantastical devices have become real, there are a lot of ideas that ended up being unused in the film. Talking to Newsweek, concept artist Edward Eyth said, "We were highly motivated to make it so we didn't look like fools in 25 years. We knew that when we see movies like Metropolis, when they're speculating about the future, it can be so far off. We weren't that far off, I guess, on a number of occasions.” Who would have thought we could walk around and watch a movie? The artists did.
They were right and the film still holds up as an enduring look at the future. Edward C. Eyth is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Hook (1991), Arachnophobia (1990) and The Rocketeer (1991).
