Kick It With Amazing ARROW Black Canary Concept Art by Andy Poon

For years, the show Arrow has been teasing that Dinah "Laurel" Lance (Katie Cassidy) would become the superhero named Black Canary. “It’s something that we’ve done all of last season. The first Green Arrow that we met wasn’t Oliver. If you think about it, on the island, it was Yao Fei. The first Deathstroke that we met wasn’t Slade Wilson. The first Merlyn that we met turned out to not be the actual Merlyn the Archer. So, all we’re really doing with Caity’s character is really beginning the story of the Black Canary, in a way that I think people might not be expecting based on the way the comic books go. There’s been a method to our madness and it seems to have pleased people so far, and we hope people continue to go on the ride with us, because it’s a great storyline, there are great twists to it, and it’s going to have a tremendous impact on Katie Cassidy’s character this season,” co executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explained. Last season they introduced Laurel's sister Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) as "Canary". Finally, in the mid-season premiere, Laurel put on the black leather and started defending Starling City. One of the artists that helped with the costume design is Andy Poon. He's a professional concept artist who's worked on network television shows like Smallville, and Slugterra.

Interestingly, the actress Cassidy actually had a hand in designing the costume. "It was so cool."Cassidy told Entertainment Weekly, "I love the creative process. Not just being an actor and here is the dialogue and saying the lines. I like collaborating with people and having an opinion and getting to put my touch on it. So when it came to the costume, I suggested a couple of things. I give credit to our insanely talented hair (Paul Edward) makeup, (Danielle Fowler) and wardrobe (Maya Mani) team for creating the look. I just made a few suggestions." She had them add lace and fishnet to the fabric "because the Black Canary wore fishnets." She added, "So it's a bit more feminine, because the suit itself it's sexy, but it is a bit modern. And I love it. That's what I wanted," she tells us. Let's see where we can put a little bit of feminine touches. Because it's a very strong suit, how can we make this a little bit more feminine?"

Concept artist Andy Poon said, "I thought she would put on Sara's jacket and adapt to that but turned out she has her very own suit. She still has a long way to go to truly become the a** kicking Black Canary."

Official Arrow Synopsis
"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow ‚– a vigilante ‚– to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be ‚– flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle‚– while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on ‚– and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. 1. I like the new Black Canary look a lot! And, I enjoy the show, but my hubs is a techie/mechanical guy (an engineer who can fix cars, computers, and electrical systems among other things), and he groans loudly during Arrow - or at least, Arrow in the second season. He can suspend disbelief for a while, and then he starts making noises . . . so I haven't watched the show in a while. (Plus, he's a Marvel die hard.)

  2. The costume's cool but I think a splash of color would have been nice, perhaps incorporating the purple from the comic image.
