Check out Battlestar Galactica concept art by  Guy Hendrix Dyas!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the unmade Battlestar Galactica (2001) movie.

This week's post was requested by Jim Chlubna who asked for "Battlestar Galactica, Tom DeSanto/ Bryan Singer" concept art.

Back in 2000, Bryan Singer set out to remake the classic 70's sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica for Fox as a mini-series. Singer was very passionate about the show and he brought on Guy Hendrix Dyas, who eventually worked with him on X2, to work on the pilot. The concept was that it would continue the storyline of the first series but set it 25 years later featuring some of the original cast.

Guy Hendrix Dyas is a professional production designer who's worked on Hollywood movies like X2 (2012) Inception (2010) and Superman Returns (2006).

Read on to find out why was the project shut down and what it would have been like.

"I was introduced to Bryan by producers, Tom DeSanto and David Gorder and I ended up drawing pretty much the entire ‘look’ for the show," Dyas told Junsui Films, "Like me, Bryan is a strong believer in respecting what has gone before and I think it was that aspect of my designs which impressed and pleased him most."

The project was green-lit in April 2001 and the show was developing nicely. They began building sets and costumes when the World Trade Center attack happened on September 11th. Production delays led to Bryan Singer leaving the project to work on X2. The studio decided the concept was "too close to home" and the production was shut down. Screenwriter Ronald D. Moore and producer David Eick developed a remake (or "reimagining") of the show for the Sc-Fi channel. It was a hit though they still used some of Dyas' original designs including a "half built Viper plane."

Universal is developing a movie that would be set between the original series and the remake, but without Bryan Singer.

  1. I have mixed feelings about the reboot series. I think it started very well but became tiresome by the end. Even so, the franchise definitely deserves a movie.

Hey, you got a shout out over on my blog today. Please stop by to read the nice things I said about you: http://armchairsquid.blogspot.com/2014/08/wonderful-team-member-readership-award.html

  2. Oy, the concept art is beautiful, but i don't trust Singer. He's probably one of my least favorite directors...him and Zack Synder. I also feel like the 2005 reimagined television series was so iconic, it's going to be hard to top. Although admittedly, the last season was crap.

  3. I have a hard time reconciling Man of Steel with Snyder myself Ms. Mariah. His other movies are very hard to enjoy, but are very beautiful. The 2005 version has become a part of today’s culture, so yeah. It’ll be hard to top.

  4. I like their design for the cylons. Shame 9/11 lead to its demise. At least they used some of the items in other television series.

  5. the first season was incredibly well written. One of the best of all time. Then the second was 50 50 and the third was ahh, so so and tiresome, and they got better with the 4th.

  6. The credits on the Official BSG Summery is interesting if true. I'd never heard Dirk Benedict and Herb Jefferson Jr. were ever officially attached to the 02 version - That would've been very cool. Always hoped those two would eventually appear in the RD Moore version.

  7. It’s a good point Zathras. I found several articles that said Dirk Benedict and Herb Jefferson, Jr. ("Boomer") were signed on: http://www.tombsofkobol.com/bsg/bsg-desanto-01.html. Benedict talked about it, but I can’t find any interview from Jefferson Jr. So, it’s possibly a rumor. They would have both been great in the Moore version. I thought they did a good job bringing in Hatch.
