Spider-Man (2002) concept art by Jim Martin |
Check out Spider-Man concept art by Jim Martin!
Did you know Doctor Octopus was almost in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film?
In Spider-Man (2002), the villain was Green Goblin (Wilem Dafoe) and in Spider-Man 2 (2004) the villain was Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), but I found some concept illustrations for the first film that included Dr. Octopus. So what gives? Artist Jim Martin confirmed that he was "later taken out of the story and put in the sequel." One draft of the script had both Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as villains, but Doc Ock was removed in Scott Rosenberg's rewrite to simplify the story.
Jim Martin is a professional concept artist who's worked on major projects like The Matrix Reloaded (2003), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1995).

What do you think of the concept art? If you've seen Spider-Man what did you think? Would you have liked to see Doctor Octopus in the first Spider-Man?

I love the art there, and while we'll never know, I suspect that they made the right call in saving Doc Ock for the second movie, it probably made both of the first two films better.
ReplyDeleteThat first one is cool.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they should've stuck with one villain per movie, especially once they hit the third one.
Wow, I love that Doctor Octopus. It's a little more like the comic book version. The Green Goblin glider is a departure from the batty design, but looks more realistic.
ReplyDeleteLove the new blog design, by the way!
Less shiny and alien like. Would be interesting to see on a big screen.
