Thrilling STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Asteroid Chase Storyboard Comparison

Check out vintage storyboards from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back!

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic science fiction film or television show. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

One of the most memorable moments in the Star Wars films is when Han Solo, Princess Leia, C-3PO and Chewbacca lead the Empire's Tie Fighters in a high-speed chase through an asteroid field.

Recently the official Star Wars YouTube channel shared the clip "The Empire Strike Back Featurette: The Flight Through the Asteroids" from one of the VCR box sets. The clip is one of the bonus features from the 1995 "Limited Edition Star Wars ISD Executor Collectors Tin" released in the UK and limited to 20,000 copies. Hopefully we'll get some more material from the set soon.

The storyboard artists are probably by Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero, but I've been burned on that assumption before. So, who knows?

Check out the video after the jump.

StarWars.com describes the clip this way:
"This vintage featurette for The Empire Strikes Back takes viewers through the film's famed asteroid field sequence, overlayed with the original storyboards. Storyboards are essential to the preproduction of a movie, as they map out how scenes will visually appear. As seen here, interior cockpit shots, TIE fighters colliding with asteroids, and the Millennium Falcon docking inside a larger asteroid all appear as storyboards almost exactly as they would be seen in the final film."

  1. Cool way to show the comparisons.
And amazing how far special effects have come.

  2. Great way to show the comparisons! Special effects have come a long way . . .but then, I still like the "old" Star Wars movies best. It's that nostalgia thing, I think.

  3. "Never tell me the odds!" Definitely one of the best lines in the whole saga. Of course, I like their next adventure in the "cave" even more.

The storyboarding is very cool - so interesting to see the development of these timeless images.
