|Riddick concept art by Jerad S. Marantz|
One of my favorite movies is Pitch Black since it introduced shockingly original creature designs, a tragic anti-hero and mind-blowing effects. This year, the third Riddick film, based on the character played by Vin Diesel, opened and it's simply called Riddick. The film got mixed reviews, but grossed $93,541,489 worldwide.
Marantz is a professional concept artist and I've shared concept art from some of his Hollywood projects before like Green Lantern, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Amazing Spider-Man.

The "Mud Demons" are the primary creature in the film. They live dormant underground until the rain season comes. They come in a variety sizes, but all have razor sharp teeth, two legs, and a scorpion-like tails with pincers.
This is what they looked like in the film:
Here's how he described the designs on his blog jeradsmarantz.blogspot.com. "This is a show I worked on a wild back for Christian Tinsley's Studio." Marantz said, "Riddick is an incredible character and I loved being able to contribute to David Towey's universe. The original design for the Mud Demon was done by Patrick Tatopoulos. I took a pass at the creature for the show and modeled it out in Z brush."

What do you think of the concept art? If you've seen Riddick what did you think?
Official Riddick Synopsis
The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
