Iron Man 2 (2010) concept art by Philippe Gaulier |
One of the most complex scenes in the Iron Man sequel was the battle against Ivan Vanko, played by Mickey Rourke, and Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey, Jr., on the Monaco Grand Prix race track. Double Negative Visual Effects, the special effects company working on the film said the greatest challenge came from the Mark V Iron Man 'suitcase' armour. They said "This portion of the work presented unique tests, firstly the conceptual challenge of making the deployment and assembly of the armour plausible and secondly the choreography of the close-quarters fight with Whiplash, which resulted in Iron Man's interaction with a live action performer, to whom he was directly connected to for much of the fight. The final Iron Man model was comprised of thousands of individually modelled and textured components." One of the artists that helped them develop the look of the scene was Philippe Gaulier and he shared some of his work on his blog. Some are digital paintings while others are "look development concepts digitally painted on top of a plate or a render to define the look of a particular shot."
Gaulier is a London based professional concept artist who's worked on Inception (2010), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

That was a cool feature. I wonder if that suit would've failed on him in the third movie like all the others?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful stuff. I've only seen the first movie but from what I've heard, the second is the weakest of the three - but it's not for lack of quality visuals!
ReplyDeleteI never thought the second was weak, but the emotional journey he makes in IM3 is brilliant. On the other hand, some hate the third film, so you never know.
ReplyDeleteSeconded.
ReplyDeleteSeconded ????
ReplyDeleteI don't think so Nipple, you can't count that high.
